Fortunately, this event has not caused fatalities, however, damages were relevant. The Italian National Department of Civil Protection involved both CNR IRPI and CNR IREA in order to perform a rapid characterization of the landslide event. The combination of rapid geomorphological mapping, rapid ﬁeld mapping, and rapid measurements of three-dimensional deformation has been crucial to support DPC operations during the ﬁrst emergency phases. In particular, the 3-D deformation field has been retrieved by exploiting the pixel-offset analysis applied to SAR images (Cosmo-SkyMed) acquired across the landslide event.We have shown that in this case standard DInSAR analyses were not suitable to retrieve the deformation field. Indeed, displacements were rapid and in the order of tens of meters, and thus largely overcoming the intrinsic limitations of interferometric analyses. To our knowledge, this is the ﬁrst time that the PO approach has been applied to provide rapid mapping of the three-dimensional surface displacements in a landslide emergency scenario.
The analyses performed as well as the concept of "rapid mapping" of landslide events in emergency scenarios to support civil protection activities fits very well with the project framework.
